You don’t need me to tell you that content is crucial to your marketing plan. Not only does content marketing increase engagement and brand loyalty; it generates more traffic and more leads.
What you might need me to tell you is what kind of content and how much will really capture your consumers.
The word on the street is that content marketing is taking over the marketing industry. I can’t even call this a rumor because I’m witnessing this every single day throughout the day. I, myself, am addicted to content! That’s right. I said it.
I am the one who scrolls through the newsfeed on Facebook EVERY single ….hour? Maybe, yes. I’m hungry for what everyone is sharing. So, the statistics behind this don’t surprise me one tiny bit.
One year ago, Nielsen reported that over 27 million pieces of content were being shared each…day. Not month. Not year. Each day. No wonder marketers are scared! I’ll admit, I get a swarm of butterflies (actually more like hummingbirds) doing the Macarena in my stomach just writing that.
In fact they said that people spend more than 50% of their time online with content and an additional 30% of their time on social channels where content can be shared.
What comes to mind?
I want my content to be shared!!!!
So how do we get our content shared for more views, more traffic, more sales, more booyah?!?!?!
Well, there are several things you can do. Here’s a couple:
Since almost half a million people are reading blogs each month, you can start a blog or blog more frequently.
And since content from experts is most shared, you can become a reputable source – but how?
Let’s look at this more closely. 90% of users are reading something because it was SHARED. And if my original content gets shared, doesn’t that mean I can become a reputable source of industry content?
Huh?! What?! How do I get in on this??
(There go the hummingbirds again.)
Alright, let’s go back to my fave resource for stats, Nielsen. They also reported that 99% of people who are posting content via their social media are sharing via multiple platforms.
And another fave o’ mine is the Huffington Post, who wrote that 80% of users prefer to connect with brands they’ve seen on Facebook.
(I’m getting tingly now. Can’t tell if I’m overwhelmed or just plain excited.)
But, here’s where all of this gets real interesting. Some of us claim to be visual learners, audible learners, need a cup of coffee or a mixed drink to learn. (Hey, whatever works.)
Here’s the real gritty of the nitty. It’s a fact that 90% of the information that comes to the brain is VISUAL.
Oh and… duh.
In fact, it’s editorial pieces that contain pictures and or video that get…
Are you ready for this?
…94% more views than those without.
No wonder posts with videos saw a 65% increase in engagement just one month after Facebook Timeline launched.
Could this also be why 75% of smartphone users watch videos on their phones at least once a day? (Source: Ooyala/Ipsos)
I’m starting to see why marketers are spending nearly 1/3 of their budget on content marketing.
And hey, since online marketing costs an average of over 60% less than traditional advertising and marketing, AND generates 3 times more leads, why wouldn’t they invest their money there?
Wait, so why are content marketers so scared then?
Oh right, they don’t know how they are going to produce enough content to match the growing demand!
